ABOUT US

Scenic Valley Farms’ fruits and vegetables are USDA organically certified and produced in fifteen high tunnels (sometimes called hoop houses) located in Southwest Wisconsin and Southeast Minnesota. High tunnels are unique compared to traditional hydroponic greenhouses because the crops are planted directly in the ground “dirt”. This ensures that the fruits and vegetables maintain that distinct field grown flavor, texture, and firmness while the protected growing environment helps improve the appearance. Some of our high tunnels are heated with solar thermal energy and all are monitored and managed by a PC based controller that is remotely accessible. For the last five years we have been developing a vertical growing system to allow us to grow day neutral strawberries from May 1 through December. We are just a few years away from commercialization. But as last year we will again have a limited supply this year. Unlike other vertical grow strawberry systems that use a water based hydroponic growing system ours system grows the strawberries in a “dirt” based substrate providing twice the berry sugar contend (brix) as when grown hydroponically. Our December strawberry brix level is 14. Sugar water is 22.

During the April to December harvest season we deliver on Tuesday and Friday.

We grow in 17 high tunnels bedded strawberries, vertical strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, greens, blackberries, garlic, herbs, vertical lettuce, etc. We grow strawberries in a soiled based vertical system 8 months a year in Wisconsin. Our vertical stacking system has 50 or 100 plant stacked pots. We are looking at artificial lite to increase our yield and extend the season. We have plans for 350 high tunnels supplying just 10% of the strawberries consumed in WI/MN/IA during the growing season. We use solar thermal to heat the tunnels and have developed a Environment Management System (EMS) greenhouse controller.

Scenic Valley Farms is a family run, organically certified farm that specializes in producing high quality, nutritious field grown fruits and vegetables in high tunnels greenhouses. On our 27 acre farm in the Driftless Region of southwest Wisconsin, we currently have fourteen high tunnels that produce a mix of blackberries, strawberries, melons, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, garlic, and basil. In order to boost organic matter and promote healthy soils we apply organic compost and rock powders to the fields underneath our high tunnels. We also use innovative solar thermal heating methods that warm the soil and air while reducing on farm greenhouse gas emissions. The processes inside the tunnels, such as cooling, heating, air circulation, irrigation are automatically controlled by a plc (programmable logic controller) microprocessor that is remotely accessible via the internet. All of our produce is certified organic by Quality Certification Services.
